Guide to Safe Sharps Management
Using a portable sharps container correctly is essential for your safety and the safety of others. Follow these best practices to ensure your TrailMed container performs at its best.
How to Use
Preparation: Ensure the lid is clicked into the "Intermediate" open position before starting your activity.
Insertion: Insert the needle or lancet through the One-Way Guard. You will feel a slight resistance; push firmly until the sharp is fully inside the chamber.
One-Handed Operation: The slim design allows you to hold the tube and insert the sharp with a single hand, minimising the risk of a "needlestick" injury to your other hand.
Temporary Closure: Between uses, click the snap-tight lid shut. The One-Way Guard provides backup protection, but the lid prevents fluid leakage.
Final Disposal: Once the container reaches the "Full" line (approx. 75% capacity), press the lid down firmly until it clicks into the Permanent Lock position. It cannot be reopened once locked.
Best Practices & Safety Protocols
The "Point-of-Use" Rule: Always keep your sharps container within arm’s reach when using a needle. Never carry an exposed sharp across a distance to get to the bin.
Check Capacity Regularly: Never force a sharp into a full container. If the bin is 3/4 full, it is time to transition to a new one.
No "Recapping": Avoid the temptation to put the plastic cap back on a needle before disposal. Go straight from the injection site to the TrailMed container.
Clear the Opening: If a needle becomes lodged in the opening, do not use your fingers to clear it. Use forceps or a sturdy tool to safely manoeuvre it into the bin.
Responsible Disposal: Once permanently sealed, dispose of the unit at an authorised biohazard collection point or your local pharmacy. Do not place in general waste or recycling.
