Remote Telemedicine & Travel Pharmacy
Complete Telemedicine, Travel Pharmacy & Remote Leader Medical Cover
24/7 UK doctor top cover, CQC-compliant medical screening, and tailored participant prescription packs deliver comprehensive clinical backup to your non-medical trip leaders without the overhead of an embedded medic.
As the trip organiser, you cover the core package (screening, medical governance, leader line, and travel pharmacy packs) directly with TrailMed. During the trip, doctor calls can be billed back to your account at an agreed inclusive rate or paid by the participant and reimbursed via their personal travel insurance.
Best For
Expeditions, charity challenges, and adventure treks where margins are tight, group sizes don't justify an embedded medic, or local regulations mandate local guiding teams, but you still want clinical cover built into your package.
The Setup
24/7 on-call UK Expedition Doctors back up your non-medical trip leaders, paired with individualised, environment-specific travel pharmacy packs issued to every participant before departure.
Clinical Cover Grade
UK-registered Doctors who are General Practitioners and Emergency/Expedition Doctors operating under CQC standards.
Kit & Governance
Bespoke, labelled Prescription Only Medicines (POMs) dispatched to participants' doors via our registered pharmacy partner, discounted expedition leader packs, and BS 8848 safety alignment.
-
You deliver doctor-backed clinical cover and genuine prescription medication to every client at a fraction of the cost of sending UK staff overseas.
-
TrailMed's CQC-registered doctors handle pre-trip health screening, pharmaceutical prescribing, and TrailMed's decisions, protecting your organisation's duty of care.
-
Because prescription packs are issued to individuals by name, you avoid legal issues surrounding group drug bags and non-prescribers carrying Schedule 17 medicines.
-
Your trip leaders can focus on route navigation, team morale, and client experience, knowing they have senior clinicians just a call away.
Advantages
Considerations
-
The top-cover doctor line relies on working communication (satellite messenger/phone or cellular coverage).
-
While our doctors guide treatment, leaders still need baseline outdoor first-aid competence (e.g., 16-hour Outdoor First Aid or FREC 3) to manage immediate scene safety.
-
For extremely remote, non-evacuation-accessible expeditions or extreme-risk sports, an on-site embedded medic remains the recommended clinical standard.
From enquiry to delivery
How It Works
Not every venture requires an embedded doctor on the trail, but every venture carries an operational duty of care. This model bridges the gap: your leaders stay in operational control on the ground, your participants carry the exact prescription medications they might need, and our UK clinical team provides medical decision-making over the phone.
Here is how the service runs across your trip:
Consent-Based Health Screening
At least four weeks out, participants and crew complete health declarations via the TrailMed portal. Our doctors review every record, flag relevant risks (e.g., pre-existing conditions, severe allergies, cardiac history), and prepare an actionable, consent-compliant medical summary for your trip leader. Your leader knows who might struggle and why, without breaching medical privacy.
Environment-Specific Medication Packs
Based on your route profile and itinerary (altitude, tropical, desert, or extreme cold), our prescribing doctors tailor individual medical packs. These contain genuine Prescription Only Medicines (POMs), such as standby antibiotics for traveller's diarrhoea, high-altitude acclimatisation medication (Diamox), antiemetics, and strong analgesia.
Direct-to-Door Delivery
Working with our UK-registered pharmacy partner, we dispense and dispatch each participant’s personalised, tamper-evident travel pack directly to their home before UK departure. For non-UK nationals, we can arrange fulfilment, travel documentation and sealed tracking for their medications, allowing your trip leader to act as a legal courier for their medication packs.
Live Pre-Departure Webinar
We host an interactive 30-minute travel health briefing for your group and leaders. An expedition medic talks through foot care, hygiene best practices, environmental symptoms, and exactly how and when to use their travel packs.
Step 1 | Pre-Trip Health Screening & Pharmacy Dispatch
Step 2 | On Expedition, Non-Medic Leader Empowerment
24/7 Dedicated Doctor Line
If a participant falls ill, feels unwell, or gets injured, your trip leader doesn’t have to guess. They can book an appointment with one of our International Expedition Doctors line via satellite phone or mobile to discuss the case with a UK doctor.
Guided Treatment Protocols
Because each participant already has a tailored TrailMed travel pharmacy pack, our doctor can instruct the leader or participant to break the seal on a specific prescription medicine (e.g., starting a specific course of broad-spectrum antibiotics or anti-sickness tablets).
Discounted FREC 3 Responder Kits
Partner operators receive discounted access to our unmedicated, hard-wearing Expedition First Responder Kits, packed with trauma dressings, splints, and diagnostics suited to outdoor leaders.
Step 3 | Flexible Telemedicine & Clinical Governance
Direct 1-on-1 Consultations
If cellular data or satellite Wi-Fi allows, participants can consult directly with our expedition doctors via video/voice call.
Straightforward Billing Options
You decide how on-trip telemedicine is funded:
Inclusive Model: Consultations are billed directly to your master account at an agreed partner rate.
Pay-As-You-Go: Participants pay for consultations as needed (£79) and receive fully itemised clinical receipts to claim back against their personal travel insurance.
NHS GP Continuity
With participant consent, we share notes and medication logs with their home NHS GP upon return, closing the loop on clinical records.
Audit-Ready Documentation
Every clinical interaction, advice note, and prescription release is logged electronically under CQC regulations, giving you a full governance trail if questions arise after the expedition.
Total peace of mind
Delivering safe, doctor-backed expeditions without an embedded medic requires a joined-up system. Rather than leaving your team to piece together screening forms, kit lists, and emergency contacts, we provide a complete end-to-end framework.
From pre-departure clinical screening and personal travel pharmacy packs to 24/7 top-cover and regulated documentation, here is a complete breakdown of what is covered under our partnership:

Case Study: 6-Day Dana to Petra Desert Trek
-
1. The Challenge
A 6-day, 80-kilometre point-to-point commercial trek across the arid Wadi Araba desert and rugged sandstone canyons into Petra, operated by local Bedouin guides and a UK charity challenge leader.
The remote desert route carried daytime temperatures exceeding 32°C, deep sand and rocky wadi terrain, and intermittent cellular reception with limited road access between remote wilderness camps. The charity partner needed robust medical governance and prescription medication support for their non-medical UK leader, but tight fundraising margins meant funding a dedicated UK embedded doctor’s flights, logistics, and fees wasn’t financially viable.
-
2. The TrailMed Solution
Pre-Trip Health Audits: 16 participants completed TrailMed’s secure online health declarations four weeks out. Our clinical team screened three participants on pre-existing asthma and blood pressure medication, liaised with their GPs, and provided an actionable, consent-compliant summary to the UK expedition leader.
Travel Pharmacy Dispatch: Working with our registered pharmacy partner, each trekker received a tamper-evident Baseline Travel Pharmacy pack alongside a bespoke Desert & Heat Module—containing high-ratio oral rehydration salts, standby antibiotics for traveller’s diarrhoea (ciprofloxacin), antiemetics, and strong analgesia—delivered directly to their UK homes.
Pre-Departure Briefing: A TrailMed expedition doctor led a 30-minute live video briefing with the group and leader, covering heat management, wet-bulb awareness, strict hydration routines, foot-friction prep, and exactly how the sealed medicine packs worked.
-
3. The Clinical Intervention
On Day 4 in the remote Wadi Feinan, a trekker developed acute, debilitating bacterial gastroenteritis complicated by rapid fluid loss and early heat exhaustion.
The UK leader dialled TrailMed’s 24/7 doctor line via satellite messenger for initial advice, and after discussion, agreed that a doctor-to-patient call was needed.
The trip leader then facilitated the technology so the patient could speak to an on-call UK clinician who reviewed the trekker's medical file, authorised immediate administration of oral anti-sickness and broad-spectrum antibiotics from their personal kit.
After the call, the doctor advised the in-country leader on active oral fluid-replacement protocols for both the patient and the broader group.
-
4. The Outcome
The participant stabilised within six hours, rehydrated overnight in camp, and safely completed the final stage into Petra on foot.
No costly vehicle extraction or hospital admission was required; the local guiding team felt fully supported, and the charity organiser met their duty of care well within budget.
